How the Crystalens® Works

As you age, your ability to quickly focus at varying distances decreases. This is called presbyopia, and it is the reason many of us need reading glasses or bifocals. The crystalens® IOL is a permanent lens that is surgically implanted by Dr. David Kleiman or Dr. Anthony Evangelista to effectively improve vision at various distances.

The main advantage of the crystalens implant is the fact that it is the first and only FDA-approved IOL to provide accommodation. Accommodation is the ability of your eye to focus on a wide range of distances. Because of this unique feature, the crystalens is more successful at delivering great vision at all distance levels — near, intermediate and far.

The key to the superior results of the crystalens is the hinged design. This hinge allows the lens to move with your eye as you shift points of focus. Because of this, the part of the lens that you see through is constantly able to adjust your focus for optimal results. This is an improvement over other IOLs, which remain stationary in the eye, decreasing versatility and range of vision.

The Results

According to clinical trials in which participants were implanted with crystalens in both eyes:

  • 98.4% of participants could pass a driver’s test without the aid of glasses
  • 100% of participants could see without glasses at the intermediate range (24" to 30")
  • 98.4% of participants could read the newspaper and phone book without glasses
  • Significantly more participants (88.4%) could see better at all distances when compared to patients implanted with a standard IOL (35.9%)
